The katagami wall stencil is used by the Japanese and have been used by them for over one thousand years. They were used to pattern textiles in a certain way and that technique is called katazome. This technique is similar to reverse stenciling where delicately resists dye. It is performed by applying rice paste through the stencil onto a silk piece of fabric. Then is takes along time because this process is repeated over and over again until the fabric is covered with the stencil that was originally put on. The silk is then dyed and the paste is then removed, revealing a beautiful design set into the fabric.
