There are basically two important types of insulation: blown in and blanket attic insulation. Blanket insulation is also called batts or rolled in.

Blanket insulation is most effective if it is used in order to cover cracks or spaces. This must be done in order to increase the R-value of your attic. If you live in a cold climate, it works great if it is applied as an extra layer.
