I know that when I first learned about thesis writing, it was painful. Everyone wanted to know why a thesis was needed? That is what the first paragraph is for, right? Truthfully, your first paragraph IS your thesis statement. It just needs to give a really good introduction and provide the basis of the information you will present. This will make for a well organized essay. The reader will look for you to explain the points you have already introduced in your first paragraph. Keep things simple by making your thesis statement one to two sentences. The first paragraph should just be that and a hooking introduction.
